The Board-Ready Marketing ROI Slide
64% of marketing leaders say proving financial impact is their biggest challenge. This guide gives you the metrics, formulas, and one-page board slide to fix that.
Marketing presents. The board asks "so what did that make us?" — and the slide full of impressions, MQLs and click-through rates has no answer. This guide is built for the person who presents, or signs off, marketing's number to the board.
Why the Number Gets Doubted
The problem is a translation failure. Marketing measures one thing; the board asks about another. 64% of marketing leaders cite proving financial impact as their single biggest challenge, board pressure is the fastest-rising source of scrutiny, and 84% of teams are stuck in a doom loop — unable to measure value, so confidence falls, so funding falls.
The Swap Table
For every vanity metric that won't survive a board meeting, there's a finance metric that will:
- Impressions / reach → Pipeline contribution (euros of qualified pipeline touched)
- Cost per lead → CAC payback (months to recoup acquisition cost)
- MQLs → MQL-to-SQL-to-won conversion (what qualified volume is actually real)
- Platform ROAS → Incremental contribution (revenue added against baseline)
- "Awareness went up" → Rule of 40 (whether the whole engine is healthy)
The Formulas Behind the Metrics
Every number is defined the way a CFO can defend it: CAC uses fully-loaded S&M spend; CAC Payback = CAC ÷ (new MRR × gross margin %); Magic Number = (net new ARR × 4) ÷ prior-quarter S&M; Rule of 40 = growth % + profit margin %. Assumptions — churn rate, margin basis, attribution model — are stated on the slide, not implied.
The One-Page Board Slide + Defence Script
The deliverable is a four-block fill-in-the-brackets slide: what it cost, what it returned, how efficient, and the trend. Paired with it are the five questions every board asks — "How do you know marketing caused that?", "Can't we just cut brand?", "What's the one number?" — and the answers that hold up under pressure.
