What is a growth partner, and how is it different from a marketing agency?

A growth partner takes responsibility for the whole path from lead to revenue, not for one channel. What that means in practice, how it differs from an agency, and when you do not need one.

If you search for help with growth, you will find agencies, consultants, freelancers and “growth partners”. The last label is used loosely. This article explains what we mean by it, how it differs from a marketing agency, and when it is the wrong choice.

Short answer: A growth partner is an external team that takes shared responsibility for your commercial growth, from the first lead to closed revenue. A marketing agency usually delivers a defined output, such as campaigns, content or a website. A growth partner starts from the bottleneck in your whole commercial system, runs experiments to fix it, and measures success in pipeline and revenue, not in activity.

A growth partner versus a marketing agency

Success is measured inReach, traffic, leadsMeetings, opportunities, pipeline and revenue

Neither is better in general. If your funnel already works and you need more output in one channel, a specialised agency is often faster and cheaper. A growth partner earns its place when you do not know where growth gets stuck, or when marketing and sales are not working as one system.

What a growth partner actually does

In our work it comes down to four things.

  1. Diagnose before you build. We look at your data, CRM, funnel and sales process to find the one bottleneck that matters most. More marketing does not fix a tracking problem, and more leads do not fix a conversion problem.
  2. Build the foundations. Tracking, a clean CRM, a clear customer profile and a shared definition of a good lead. Without these, you cannot see what works.
  3. Run experiments. Instead of a fixed campaign plan, we test channels, audiences and messages in small steps, so you see what works before you invest more.
  4. Scale what works and stop what does not. Winners get more budget. Everything we learn is documented so it does not leave with the team.

What is a Growth Engine?

A Growth Engine is a commercial system in which growth is predictable, measurable and repeatable, instead of depending on campaigns, individual heroics or luck. Marketing, sales, data and process work together, so you know where your pipeline comes from and what happens when you invest more.

We describe the path to it as the Commercial Maturity Journey, with five stages:

StageWhat you hear from the companyWhere growth is stuck
Flying Blind”We don’t know what is actually driving growth.”Visibility: tracking, CRM discipline, a proven customer profile
Struggling for Demand”We need more opportunities.”Too little pipeline and no repeatable demand
Struggling for Conversion”We get opportunities, but too few convert.”Conversion: leads go cold, marketing and sales are not aligned
Struggling to Scale”We are growing, but everything feels harder.”Complexity, manual processes, unreliable forecasting
Predictable Growth Engine”Growth is predictable, measurable and scalable.”The destination

The stages build on each other, and skipping one rarely works. A company that is flying blind will not solve it by buying more advertising.

When you do not need a growth partner

  • You need execution in one channel and your funnel, CRM and proposition already work. A specialised agency is usually the better fit.
  • You are looking for a fixed number of leads at a fixed price, without giving access to your CRM and sales data. Then nobody can measure what works.
  • You have no sales process or nobody to follow up on leads yet. Fix that first. More leads will not solve it.
  • You want to hand off the problem completely. A growth partner works with your team. It needs your time and your data.

Where to start

Write down in one sentence where your growth gets stuck right now. If that is hard, the bottleneck quiz helps you name it. If you want a partner who works with you continuously, see the Growth Partner model. If you want to know where growth really stalls before you spend money on execution, look at the Growth Audit.
